Happy New Year of the Horse !
The new year started for me with a lovely ceremony at a local shrine, followed by many gatherings with the extended family and delicious food and I truly hope that you also had wonderful days with your loved ones.
Living in Japan, you will be greeted at shrines by big images of the zodiac sign which this year is the horse !
On the first day back at school, many children had interesting stories of their winter holidays and we also had the excitement of new children joining our school.
At Pre–Kindergarten we were lucky to welcome little Janine and her family and we are thrilled to have them with us at Pre–Kindergarten and at DSKI !
Our new unit will focus on „Animals and Food“, so we took the opportunity to talk to the children about horses and other farm animals and read some related books together.
The children then each coloured a horse which they proudly hung up on the winter display board, connecting the previous unit to the current one and giving the sleigh ( shape) some colourful horses.
The Pre–Kindergarten room not only boasts many books, but also lots of interesting puzzles and a multitude of animal figurines.
So after finishing various animal puzzles, the children looked for an animal and matched it to the corresponding picture, demonstrating that they have good recognition skills.
On Friday we read even more books about animals and again the children found different animals to match to the illustrations or photos.
This kind of activity is not only engaging for the children, but gives teachers the chance to teach new vocabulary and the children to show their knowledge and ask questions. An additional fun activity was riding the horses and the Pre–Kindergarten children enjoyed different ones and galloped to the tunes of a well known German children song:
Hopp, hopp, hopp, Pferdchen, lauf Galopp !
Hopp, hopp, hopp, Pferdchen lauf Galopp
May 2026, the year of the Horse be a bright, joyful and healthy year for all of you and may we enjoy many exciting adventures together!
With kind regards, mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Anita Ursula Mönch
