This week after the autumn holidays was again all about different autumn activities– from creating colourful autumn collages where also the Playgroup children participated enthusiastically, colouring Halloween baskets and celebrating this festival, singing beautiful traditional German autumn songs to doing some games which foster understanding of vocabulary and can easily be repeated at home on any day.

Additionally for the first time at DSKI I held the Parents Cafe with my colleague Mr.Gerrit where we demonstrated different strategies for children in EY to learn the German language. We had a great and fun time with the parents and were very pleased about the interest and the many questions at the tea time afterwards.

Thank you to all the parents for their participation!

The Pre–Kindergarten children are still making new discoveries in their current subjects of „Colours and Shapes“ and have created many pieces of art using different techniques like cutting, colouring, gluing and collecting autumn leaves and acorns.

On one of the sunny days, they went outside to take a close look at the autumn trees to discover the variety of colours and they made some amazing tree collages using paper triangles in autumn colours. Great job !

During our indoor discovery times, the Pre–Kindergarten love looking at our books and have discovered many animals, sometimes depicted in an array of colours by the artist. Brown bear, red bird, blue horse…they are all there. This triggered their interest in knowing more about animals, which gave us the perfect opportunity to build up vocabulary in a playful manner.

The children built many different structures for the animals to stand on or live in and learnt a lot of new vocabulary. As their confidence builds in expressing themselves, they are very proud when they can find animals they know in books and match them with the toy animal on hand. You can do this activity with your child easily at home, just invest in some good books and some good toy animals ( ours are from the German company Schleich ) and you will be amazed at the conversations that follow. For our class this is also a great opportunity to tune into the next unit of „ Animals and Food‘ .

The Playgroup children are becoming very confident, too and they are also becoming good friends. It is lovely to see how happily they play together and how enthusiastically they mingle with the older children during outside time.

This time the Playgroup friends also created some autumn leaves with colours they chose and we displayed them on our autumn wall to shine.

Some of the Playgroup children will join Pre–Kindergarten soon and they know the classroom and myself as well as Ms.Nini and Ms.Kotomi which will make their transition smoother. This was on my mind when I created the Playgroup 20 years ago as well as the Pre–Kindergarten– an easier transition into a new curriculum via a familiar classroom and familiar faces.

We sang a beautiful German autumn song together which the Pre–Kindergarten children also love : „Der Herbst, der Herbst, der Herbst ist da.“

Der Herbst, der Herbst

And because next week there will be the preparations for Sankt Martin including lantern making, we looked at this traditional song which depicts the famous story of Sankt Martin sharing his coat.

Sankt Martin

But before this festival, there was another celebration at school – Halloween ! The Pre–Kindergarten children in collaboration with K1 painted boxes which would hold some goodies at trick and treat on Friday. They showed great concentration and skill when colouring.

On Friday then, the children came dressed up in their favorite costumes and they looked really adorable. Together with all their friends from EY, they walked around the classrooms to get some bounty . Lots of smiles and laughter ended this eventful week!

Well, I hope everyone will get a good rest over the weekend, because next week will be even busier: Open Day, Welcoming new friends into the classroom, Lantern making with the parents, Emergency drill and then our very first exciting excursion to the Peace and Nature Farm.

Get ready for an exciting week ahead !

Kind regards, mit freundlichen Grüßen,
