Pre-KG 2023 / 24 Blog 31 Facing a busy week in Pre–Kindergarten

 Pre-KG 2023 / 24 Blog 31

Facing a busy week in Pre–Kindergarten !

Of all the body parts, the head and face are probably the ones which are connected to the most figures of speech: to lose face, to save face, to take things at face value, to keep your head, to have your head in the clouds….the list goes on.

We see people with happy faces, sad faces, open faces and we often can read other people‘s emotions in their faces.

The IB profile page shows a head spelling out all the Learner‘s attributes, which we inspire to incorporate into our lives.

So even more reason that the Pre–Kindergarten class should devote this week‘s learning to this important body part – the head including the face !

The children learnt the vocabulary playfully through the Körperteilblues, our morning song, the „1,2,3…“ point to the right body part game, through drawing and through creating faces with Playdough.

It is amazing to see how well the children know the body parts in English as well as in German.

Great fun and a showcase for the children’s creativity was provided by several Playdough sessions and the children even included details like eyebrows and glasses in their creations.

Bravo, Pre–Kindergarten for your creativity!

And just to make sure we got all the facial features covered, the children had a good look into the mirrors the next day. Lots of smiles and also funny faces could be seen and it was a good activity to review the vocabulary.

On Thursday, after playing with one of our wonderful multi layered puzzles ( this time about the tulip growth ) we went to the tulip field to pull out the tulip bulbs with the K1and K2 classes.

Ms. Kameda from the Rokko Island Beautification Commitee explained the procedure and then a lot of pulling began !

It was not easy to hold the tulip stalks at the right angle in order to get out the bulbs as well, but after a while and several tries everyone  succeeded. It was a great activity to remember the life cycle of plants and even more fun to do it together with all the friends and teachers of EY! We received some bulbs to plant in the spring and then admire the colorful tulips again !

On the last day before the holidays we made koinobori in class. These are flags in the shape of carps and are hung from the roof on May 5th, Children’s Day in Japan every year. Carps represent strength and courage and displaying them comes with the wish for the children to have these traits.

KOINOBORI

The Pre–Kindergarten children revisited the book „The Rainbow Fish“ and then happily created each their own colorful carp streamer, followed by joyful dancing to the traditional Japanese song ! What a wonderful way to connect unit learning to one of our host county Japan‘s charming traditions !

Friday was also the day where the school had to say goodbye to our assistant teacher Ms. Elisabeth aka Ms. Lizzie.

Ms.Lizzie was not only the bus attendant, but a valuable assistant in EY, especially in Pre–Kindergarten where she lit up the room and our lives with her smile every day. She showed quick understanding and great patience when playing with the children and in any situation that required her attention. She will be missed by the children and colleagues alike and we hope that she will visit us again in the future.

So this very busy week in Pre–Kindergarten where lots of learning and discoveries happened ended with big hugs and more dancing !

But did you know that at the beginning of the week the Pre–Kindergarten children had the chance to experience a fantastic visual and auditory spectacle in form of the Aladdin performance?

It was amazing to see how the DSKI grades 3 to 6, led by our music teacher Ms.Azusa, Mr.Timm and their homeroom teachers, put their hearts into bringing the story to life. The Pre–Kindergarten children watched mesmerized for almost 1.5 hours, enthralled by the lively performance and by the stunning costumes which the DSKI mothers had created.

Again lots of connections were made through the units and throughout the classes, even with previous Pre–Kindergarten children and siblings of present Pre–Kindergarten performing!

What a fabulous opportunity to bring the DSKI community together as there were also two evening performances for everyone to enjoy.

Wishing everyone a pleasant Golden Week with happy celebrations !

With kind regards,

Mit herzlichen Grüßen,
