Self-Expression

The definition of Self-Expression is “The expression of one's feelings, thoughts, or ideas, especially in writing, art, music, or dance.”

The first unit in Pre-Kindergarten covers the subjects of “ Colours and Shapes ” and self-expression is one of the IB related concepts, so the children did some art projects this week combining both subjects.

Each child chose a paper of their favourite colour as a backdrop for art with three popular shapes - a circle, a heart and a triangle - and then experimented with different media to create their individual pieces.

As the Pre-Kindergarten children have experienced the bottle printing technique before, they were quite adapt at using a bottle and finger paint to print on a triangle.

Having previously used crayons, the children were also familiar with them and could use them well.

And they really love to sing along to this charming crayon song.

But colour pencils were a different story as they are a little hard to hold and every child displayed an individual grip. It was a good experience with a different tool and a different amount of strength needed.

The wonderful Fashion Museum on Rokko Island is holding another fabulous exhibition right now. This time Japanese top artists are showing their incredible skills of what can be drawn with colour pencils. When I first saw the poster, I thought the images were photographs and after checking out the exhibits I was absolutely stunned.

What better way to make a connection between the current subject and the community than going to the museum.

The Pre-Kindergarten children were also in awe and even though they are very young, they could find some art that interested them (the beautiful animal drawings for sure) and took away some new knowledge.

I just love their curiosity and I am always happy to foster their love for museum exhibitions !

Please visit again with your child when you have a chance!

This week there were many additional opportunities for the children to express themselves or watch others do so.

The grade 3 hosted an assembly in the MPR and showed the school community interesting details about the body systems. Well done grade 3, we loved watching your performance !

The Pre-Kindergarten children expressed a lot of joy when ….

Jumping in the ball bath at Kobecco Land ….

Choosing a big potato from our plentiful harvest to take home and share with their family..

Celebrating a friend’s birthday together in class.

Haruki turned 3 years old on Friday and everyone was so happy to throw him a party with lots of balloons and delicious German cheese cake which was baked by his mum. Vielen Dank, liebe Ms.Lilli !

Lieber Haruki, du bist jetzt drei Jahre alt und ein grosser Bruder geworden!  Wir haben uns so gefreut mit dir deinen Geburtstag zu feiern.

I wish everyone a wonderful holiday where you can be active, relaxed, adventurous or creative!

Pre-KG 2023/ 24 Blog 8 Autumn treats

Autumn treats

The heat is subsiding and autumn has finally arrived!

Japan has a wonderful relationship with autumn from delicious food, over a myriad of autumn festivals to stunning foliage.

Many countries celebrate autumn and depending on where you are from, autumn might mean to harvest apples, pears, grapes, berries, wheat and pumpkins, walk in colourful woods, craft with acorns, leaves and chestnuts, let kites fly on a windy day, see a hedgehog hide or eat seasonal food like mushrooms, persimmons, sweet chestnuts and sweet potatoes.

Autumn comes in many colours and shapes !

To tune into the autumn food mood, the children role played a lot in our class kitchen, making a variety of bentos and cut different fruit and vegetables. They really took to the cutting practice and tried again and again.

Perseverance is the key to success.

We also watched a beautiful traditional German autumn song called, “Der Herbst, der Herbst, der Herbst ist da…. and looked at some of the fruits autumn provides.

Der Herbst ist da

Ms.Anita bought some autumn treats in the form of apples, grapes, chestnuts and bagels with berries.

The Pre-Kindergarten children showed their cutting skills and then enjoyed the delicious food very much.

The class was very excited to hear about the harvest of the sweet potatoes which they had planted previously.

Together with K1 and K2 we took our blue buckets, marched to the nearby field,

listened to Ms.Kameda’s instructions, pulled and dug a lot and then marvelled at how big the sweet potatoes were again this year.

The children were very proud of their harvest and we can’t wait baking the sweet potatoes next week together with all of our friends from Pre-Kindergarten and EY.

We ended the week with a celebration for Elias 3.Birthday and some very yummy treats in form of homemade banana muffins. They were delicious, thank you, Ms.Johanna!

A very happy birthday to Elias, we were so happy to celebrate with you!
